Welcome to our ranch!

rainbowOur family has been raising superior quality horses, cattle and bison for almost a century. During the ninety odd years we have been in the registered livestock business, our programs have had constant breed improvement as the foremost goal. It is our philosophy that a controlled bloodline-breeding program makes dominant breeders with distinctive carry-on breeding ability. Although we have outcrosses, our program has maintained good, solid foundation lines that have that carry-on ablility.

When someone mentions a Sutton bred horse, Herford or bison, the bloodlines have proven themselves over and over. The number of customers that return year after year to buy our stock is testimony to the success of our breeding programs. With all the animals we breed, we believe in producing a quality animal that is the best possible; raising it in a humane way; showcasing it professionally and conducting our business in the most honest manner possible.

Our Land, Our Products

tractorThe ranch stretches for 10 miles along the shores of Lake Oahe in central South Dakota. Comprised of 9,500 acres of rolling prarie and rugged Missouri breaks, the land produces excellent pasture for the herds of 250 registered Horned Herfords and black baldies, 100 Bison and 120 registered Quarter Horses and Paints. Much of the flat land (dry and irrigated) is planted to wheat, corn, oats, millet, sunflowers, and alfalfa. Annually crops, both animal and plant, are sold to the public.

Our Legacy

Our rich ranch history began in 1894 and continues today. We are proud of where we have come from and where we are going. In 1993, Raymond Sr. died and left the reins of the family ranch to the next generation – his son Raymond Jr., daughter-in-law Georga, and grandaughter Heather D.V.M.. Together we continue to focus on producing the best possible animals in our herds of cattle, horses and Bison.

AQHA trophyIn 2004 we registered our 1900th foal. In 2001 our ranch was honored with the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Legacy Award and in 2000 we were honored with the AQHA 50 Year Cummulative Award. We are the oldest family Quarter Horse Production Sale in the world and have sold Herefords and Bison for over sixty years. You don't stay in business if you don't do everything right and we believe in our horses as do a great number of repeat buyers from all over the world. We believe in horses that are beautiful in mind, body and disposition, they can be specialists, all around performers, or just faithful friends.
