Raymond Sutton Herefords

Horned Herefords

eartag graphicBull in profileHorned Hereford cattle have been the breed of choice on the ranch for over 90 years. Raymond continues the tradition of raising top quality Hereford cattle both for registered herds and the commercial cowman. Only the top 10% of bull calves are kept for sale as two-year-olds. They are rugged individuals that are not pushed for growth, but are left to grow on protein rich pastures with mineral supplements. During the fall and winter of their second year, they are placed on creep feed and alfalfa hay.

When sold, they are semen tested and guaranteed as breeders. The ranch also produces registered replacement heifers. As times have changed, so has our marketing approach and after hosting 53 annual production sales, breeding stock is now offered for sale at private treaty.

Cows & calfsOur cow/calf operation produces animals sold the spring of their yearling year. After calving, cows and calves are turned into pastures along the shores of Lake Oahe. In late fall, the calves are weaned, vaccinated and wormed. They are placed on a ration of ground hay, corn and soy meal and fed until they are sold at private treaty.

Raymond continually upgrades the herd with modern bloodlines paying strict attention to EPDs and other production records. The goal is to produce animals that can replicated the desirable traits today's meat buying public demands.
