Raymond Sutton Bison

American Bison

Buffalo NickleIn 1909, grandfather Edwin traded two Herford bulls for two bred bison cows and a bull from the original Scotty Phillip herd. This became the nucleus of the nation's oldest privately owned herd of American buffalo/ison. Bison are marketed privately for head and hide, and meat, or as breeding stock. Until 1980 the bison herd remained in the Sutton Brothers Corporation. At that time, John and James sold their share while Raymond retained 10 heifers and two bulls to continue the breeding operation.

Today's herd has been continuously owned for 90+ years and numbers around 100 head. Our herd offers a very unique genetic pool for no new blood has been introduced since 1925 when 25 head of cows were purchased at the Scotty Phillips dispersion and added to the herd. This offers you the opportunity to introduce a very special bloodline into your breeding program. Our adults are a good dark brown and have excellent conformation. We offer both clean breeding stock and trophy bulls. Each year's calf crop is available for sale in the fall.

Bison in pastureAn excellent example of what the herd produces is the head that was donated to the Quarter Horse Foundation Auction in Atlanta. The magnificent head, from one of our prime herd bulls, commanded a final bid of $8,000. The balance of the herd is of the same high quality.
